Long Beach home’s immortal link to John Hughes and Ferris Bueller
August 7th, 2009 Categories: Real Estate Tools
The untimely passing of movie director John Hughes had at least one TV news station — KCAL Channel 9 — going to an unusual place to report the story: Long Beach.
What’s the connection to Hughes? On Country Club Drive in the city’s tony Los Cerritos neighborhood stands a house that fans of 1980s teen comedy will instantly recognize: The Ferris Bueller house from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
The white two-story home with a porch and columns in front is something of an attraction in Long Beach, and locals like to show it off.
A few years ago, Times humor columnist Steve Harvey weighed in on the significance of the Ferris Bueller house:
Hughes says the comedy about some wandering high school students was set in Chicago because “it’s my city, and I really wanted to show it at its best.”
But, he admitted, the two-story Ozzie and Harriet-type house depicted as Ferris’ home in the opening scene was actually in Southern California.
It “disappointed me that the first shot in my movie that took place in Chicago was in Long Beach,” Hughes said.
Eighteen years later and the guy’s still grumbling about having to visit Long Beach!

Men and Women React to the Economy in Different Ways
August 4th, 2009 Categories: Tips & Tools
PriceGrabber.com, a part of Experian, explores the impact of the economy on online consumer behavior in its latest Consumer Behavior Report, Economic Trends in Consumer Spending. Results are based on a survey of 3,156 online consumers conducted over the past two months. Survey data revealed that most consumers are cutting back as a result of the economy and that the economy has affected men and women differently.
Consumers are more focused on saving now compared with six months ago.
Even with rumors that the recession could be bottoming out, consumers are cutting back even more than they were six months ago. PriceGrabber.com’s June 2009 survey revealed that 67% of consumers are making a concerted effort to spend less, compared with 57% of consumers who were cutting back in PriceGrabber.com’s January 2009 survey (conducted from Jan. 6-13; 1,545 respondents)- revealing a 10% increase. The June survey also found that of the consumers who have changed their spending habits in the last year, 90% said they still will use their saving strategies after the economy improves by continuing to live with a conservative mentality.
